Netherlands: Kansspelautoriteit

Regulated by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). Licensed operators in Netherlands.

What KSA stands for

KSA stands for Kansspelautoriteit, in English the Netherlands Gambling Authority. It describes itself as a zelfstandig bestuursorgaan, an independent administrative body.

It licenses and supervises gambling in the Netherlands, including remote gambling under the Remote Gambling Act.

What the regulator licenses

The Kansspelautoriteit issues the Koa licence for remote gambling under article 31a of the Betting and Gaming Act.

That covers online casino games, online poker and sports betting offered to Dutch players.

It also licenses lotteries where the prizes together are worth 4,500 euro or more.

How to check a licence on the register

The register is the register of licensees on the Kansspelautoriteit website, published in Dutch as the Kansspelwijzer. The links are in the sources below.

Search by company name, website, app or licence number.

A result tells you whether the Kansspelautoriteit issued a licence to that operator. If the site or app is not in the register, it is not licensed in the Netherlands.

Licence number format

The Kansspelautoriteit publishes a reference, called a kenmerk, in the decision that grants each licence. The pattern is a file number, a slash, then a series and sequence number.

Example: 1601/01.247.154, the licence granted to TOTO Online B.V. on 29 September 2021. We record that operator as KSA-1601 using the file number.

The register itself can also be searched by licence number.

Complaint route

Casino deadline: Complaints procedure required by law.

Where to escalate next: Report to the KSA, courts for the money.

The KSA checks licence compliance. It does not recover funds for players.
